Decided to go a bit sideways today (Crab like, and clacking my claws as I did so), from the rock and prog vein I was in recording wise, and try a little of this.
Very short album, but bops along nicely - I believe a couple of these were favoured in the Northern Soul scene at one time - and you can certainly hear it in every track.
But being neither Northern, nor quantifiably posessed of a soul myself (I sold it for a bag of chips the other day - I wasn't using it much anyway), it sounds a little bit Soul-lite to me...like it was just toned down a bit for polite society of the time, falling somewhat short of a sweat soaked soul session. But the band is great... a lot of puch and snap (And it occurs that it must have been a bit of a curiosity for the time to have a group who's members are both white and black - outside Stax maybe - )
you can hear the singer(s) are not having to try too hard to achieve this (good) performance, it's just that you can hear they(?) could probably really let go if they wanted to, but don't quite.
Nevertheless, this would be great bashing out of a convertible on a summer's day... but if, like me you can't afford a convertible... you could just cut the roof off your Hyundai, or Kia (or if you cannot, like me, afford a car of any description... steal one, cut the roof off that), put this on, and you're away!
(doesn't say anywhere on this album who the female backing singers are)
