| Magic Marmalade 17th Nov 2016 | Review"Brigh-it eyes, bur-ning like Fia...." ...Nope. This is not that at all. Nothing to do with the film, so don't expect Uncle Art to bum you out entirely, or accompanying selections of dramatic score and theme music. I didn't know the name Bo Hansson myself when I found it in a record bin, and thought it was going to be a bit of gentle folk music, going by the cover and theme alluded to in the title... The fact it was on Charisma is what made me buy it in the end... perhaps towards the prog-gy end of the folk spectrum I thought, which would suit me fine. But this is not folk at all, or anything remotely folky frankly. This is flat out progressive music. I wouldn't overstate it by adding the word "Rock" to that name either, but prog it is. A general kind of prog with no vocals, but plenty of the features a prog fan will be familiar with, in terms of instrumentation and music style: Long track, noodling with organ sounds, nice guitar work, and so on. You could say that this is almost like a backing track to some yet unfinished great prog album, but a softer, more "easy listening" prog... E.L.P (?), but without the extravagance and Drama :) of Yes, or the mythologies, ambition, or overblown pretentiousness of other bands from this part of the musical world. In fact, it doesn't really register that much, with nothing to really distinguish one track from the next, and you can kind hear of why Bo Hansson is not so well known as all that (Mind you, this was competing with punk at the time of release too !). Pleasant, nice... great for when you're doing the ironing, but it won't rock your world.
