In Australia "What About Me" was huge and "debuted on the charts during February (1982) and five weeks later reached #1, where it remained for six weeks, going on to become the second biggest selling single in Australia for 1982 (behind Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger") and went on to win the "Best Single" award at the 1982 Countdown Music Awards." from Wikipedia. It was later released again in 2004 by Shannon Noll, an Australian Idol winner and knocked "Hey Ya!" by Outkast off the #1 spot and went platinum 4 times and was the highest selling single in Australia for 2004.
Unfortunately though for Moving Pictures it was far and away the best song they ever produced and on the strength of it this album spent 7 weeks at the top of the Australian Album charts in 1982. Their follow album Matinee only reached No. 16 in the charts and the first single "Back to the Streets" made the top 40 but three others from the album failed to chart at all and band finally ground to halt in 1987.
The success of the hit song, "What About Me", in Australia led them to America where it became a hit, reaching #29 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1983. The song stayed in the U.S. charts for such a long time that it managed to make Billboard's top 100 Pop Singles of 1983, at #88, a rare feat for a single with such a low peak position. The song made an unusual comeback in 1989, peaking at #46.
I do recall the song was in moderate rotation on MTV throughout 1983.
