When this album was first issued in 1967, the Argo label had already become Cadet, as the Argo name was already used by UK Decca for their spoken-word and early music label. And Chess was owned by the Chess brothers (Leonard and Phil), Marshall Chess is Leonard's son, and was made president of the label by its new owner GRT after Leonard died. Marshall later ran Rolling Stones Records.
Well, ppint, now you know why I've stopped buying commercially-issued CDs. I look for LP's, hopefully first-issues but will settle for reissues as long as the sleeves haven't been(too drastically) redesigned. These Etta James tracks originally appeared on Argo, a Chess subsidiary. The Tell Mama LP would also have been originally issued on Argo and if this copy had been a first issue, it would've carried the Argo label. As it is, this is a re-issue and by MCA by the looks of it. A company that laughingly called itself Music Corporation of America! More like Money Corporation of America 'cause sure as eggs they don't give two hoots for the music!
neil f: i know, i know. . . - but i'm used to checking cds claimed to be compilation (or extended reissues) of the original tracks really are, and not gunged-up mono, re-recordings or even by assemblages of people who once knew one of the real band's members - that, i've learned to cope with; but i automatically ignore releases that tell me (sometimes only in the small print) they truly are gunged-up mono, re-recordings, and/or by assemblages of thrid patties (too good a tablettything's auto-mis-correction to re-correct): i'm not sure i can cope with their lying about that. . .
It's a sign of the times, I'm afraid. Quoting ppint: "it's bad enough, bigconglommeratentertainmentcorpsinc's claiming re-recordings & rechannellings to be the original recordings - but when they start claiming that the originals are re-recordings...!!! "
These multinationals don't give a rat's for the music they're issuing, or its history(providence). They just rake in the money, that's all they care about!
the label information is misleading at best - these are not 1987 recordings made by mca, but the 1967 recordings made at rick hall's fame studios, muscle shoals, for/by the chess brothers' chess records. (ta for correction, philmh - i confuzled the son's name with the family's surname. corrected 27/7/2015.) (see 1/1968 merkin cadet lp, lps-802.)
