 Thanks, I was aware that Nits was Nuts. And yes, the words are quite disturbing. Apparently MacColl selected the best and only those which were "acceptable". If this is not worrying, I wonder what the rest were like? At least most bawdy ballads involved consensual acts!

 'Nits' is just Scots for 'nuts'.

 And yes, it actually does say "The Lassie Gath'ring Nits". I assume that they were a welcome source of protein! ;-)
