Notes

The Grass Roots rock group name, which originated in 1965, was the name of a band project by Philip “P. F. Sloan” Schlein and Steve “Barri” Lipkin who were both record producers and songwriters at Dunhill records. Both Mr. Sloan and Mr. Barri had composed several tunes so that they could cash in by means of the folk rock movement. The first incarnation of this Grass Roots group had consisted of Mr. Sloan, who provided the lead vocals and played the guitar, Mr. Barri, Larry Knechtel, the keyboardist, Joe Osborn, the bass player and Dayton “Bones” Howe, the drummer. Accordingly, Mr. Barry and Mr. Sloan had issued some demo tunes under the Grass Roots name and sent those tunes to several radio stations in the San Francisco region.

When some interest in the Grass Roots band occurred, Mr. Sloan and Mr. Barri had traveled to San Francisco where they found a group of which the members were Willie Fulton (lead vocals and guitar), Denny Ellis (guitar and backing vocals), David Stensen (bass and backing vocal) and Joel Larson that could incorporate the Grass Roots name. Consequently, this new “Grass Roots” band had recorded all the tunes of this Dunhill disc of 33.33 rpm, most notably Where Were You When I Needed You, which is the only tune that had achieved national success in 1966.

When this band had asked Mr. Sloan and Mr. Barri if they might record and perform their own blues rock-oriented style, they had refused to accept their style. Therefore, this “Grass Roots” group had left Dunhill and returned to San Francisco with the exception of Mr. Larson who was offered the occasion to become a member of the upcoming Grass Roots group, but decided to play with Gene Clark, who was a member of the Byrds.

Even though this Dunhill disc of 33.3 rpm sold poorly, “Where Were You When I Needed You" had peaked at position # 28 of the Billboard hit parade of discs of 45 rpm..
