Notes

BB Album Reviews: March 2, 1968 (page 52)

Although this Dunhill disc is the first disc of Steppenwolf, this group was actually formed in Toronto in 1964 under the name of Jack London and The Sparrows. After this group had little commercial success, Jack London, Art Ayre and Nick Saint Nicholas had departed, The only two members, who remained were Dennis and Jerry Edmonton, who had shortened the group name to the Sparrows, thru which Joachim “John Kay” Krauledat and John “Goldy McJohn” Goadsby had become members.

After the Sparrows had relocated to the United States in 1967, the Sparrows became Steppenwolf by means of Gabriel Mekler due to the fact that Mr. Mekler was inspired by the Steppenwolf novel that was written by Hermann Hesse. Accordingly, two Los Angeles based musicians, who were Michael Monarch and John “Rushton Moreve” Morey had joined this Canadian-American band.

This was the only Steppenwolf disc of 33.33 rpm that was both monaurally and stereophonically issued in the United States. Even though the white-label audition issue of this Dunhill disc was monaurally issued with only the Dunhill logo, the stock copy monaural was only released by means of the ABC logo adjacent to the Dunhill logo. However, the original stereophonically issued stock disc (Dunhill DS 50029) was issued by means of solely Dunhill logo. Furthermore, early issue front jacket images of this disc of 33.33 rpm did not have any indication of including the hit Born To Be Wild due to the fact that Born To Be Wild was just a tune of this disc until Born To Be Wild became a big success in the summer of 1968. Finally, after Dunhill and ABC records had merged, all subsequent issues of this disc were issued with both the Dunhill and ABC logos adjacent to one another.
