Notes

CB June 22, 1968

Michael Webb Pierce was a super prosperous country singer in the 1950s and the 1960s. Even though In The Jailhouse Now was his most successful country hit in the early 1950s, Mr. Pierce's most prosperous popular hit was I Ain't Never.

Additionally, he was a fantastic composer of tunes that were sung by country, popular, rhythm and blues, and even rock artists. For example, the Four Preps had popularized the tune "I Ain't Never" in 1959, the same year that Mr. Pierce had also achieved prosperity with this tune.

This was the final disc of 33.33 rpm that was both monaurally and stereofonically issued in both the United States and Canada.

That no more mono albums were issued after this may explain why, when Decca changed the manufacturing info below the rainbow strip to mention "MCA Records Inc., Calif., U.S.A." in 1971, there was no mono "Long Play 33⅓" equivalent the way there had been with the "Decca Records Inc." and "Decca Records, A Division of MCA Inc." variants of the rainbow strip label design.

Meanwhile, there was a bit of misplaced optimism in part of the liner notes. After 1967's "Fool, Fool, Fool," Mr. Pierce never again had a Top 10 country hit. Though I have exactly two records of his - a 1970 repress of his 1952 hit "There Stands The Glass," and a 1972 single "I'm Gonna Be A Swinger" - I can say that while there are diehard fans of his, some who aren't as enamoured with his vocal style may consider it to be "too Pierce-ing."
