A CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
with LEROY ANDERSON
and his Orchestra
LEROY ANDERSON is an outstanding personality in many different roles---composer, conductor, teacher, performer, and arranger. He is also a paradox: a creator of serious music who has written one hit tune after another. "Blue Tango," which sold over a million records, "Sleigh Ride," "Syncopated Clock," and "Belle of the Ball" all became instrumental standards as well as dances; his serious music, such as the "Irish Suite" and the "Scottish Suite," is almost as popular. A gifted organist, Anderson also plays the piano and---to show the range of his talents---the double bass.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1908, Leroy Anderson was graduated from the Music Department of Harvard University, where he was music director and arranger for the Harvard Band. After teaching at Radcliffe, he entered the U. S. Army as a private in 1942, served with the American Forces in Iceland, and was discharged as a captain four years later.
Previous albums have shown Anderson's great variety. These recordings extend his range. They include some of the most cherished Christmas music ever composed. Their arrangement is out of the ordinary. Originally Christmas carols were meant not only to be sung but danced to, and Leroy Anderson has kept his treatments appropriately bright and fresh in spirit as well as in tempo. Altogether this is an unusual collection brilliantly interpreted.

Maybe someone has this album from 1959 and can scan the back cover. The back cover is full of liner notes and too much to write at this time, so I have combined liner notes from this album here (but not nearly all of them), with different liner notes from the 1955 Decca DL 8193 record, which I cannot find at this site. Decca DL 8193 is a very fond memory for me. It was my favorite Christmas record my mother owned when I was a youngster in the 1960s and the early 1970s. I affectionally referred to it as the "Kitty Cat Record" back then, because of the adorable front cover of the pretty and fluffy white cat in the wrapped but open, slightly shredded, red, white and green gift box with a partial look of a gorgeous, decorated Christmas tree behind him/her, all with a pretty light blue background. Probably my favorite album cover ever.
That album cover can be found here Leroy Anderson And His Orchestra as one of the three Extended Play 45s from the 1955 "Kitty Cat Record" full album.
