Produced by Donovan
Engineered by Mike Bobak at Morgan Studios, London
Thanks to Mary (Fiddle), Mike Thomson (Bass, Organ), Danny Thompson (Concert Bass Fiddle on "Celia"), John Carr (Drums), Julian and his sisters, also Smudge, Rod and Mick, Cynthia (sings on "Star", Wynken", and "Pee Song"), and other friends for their help.
The tri-fold colour poster was only included in the first 1,000 pressings of the orange label. Subsequent orange label versions and the other two label designs do not include the poster.
A further minor label variation - 3A, if you will - has the full stops reinstated for H.M.S. on the rising sun label and the song titles in upper and lower case, rather than the all capitals, as depicted above.
The change from the original orange to the purple/lilac was initiated within weeks of the album's UK release. (I bought it on issue and again, three weeks later, with the newer purple/lilac issue. A brief pressing run of 'rising sun' Dawn labels was made when Dawn changed its label design again but HMS Donovan had many more purple/lilac pressings than the first (orange) or third (rising sun) variants. Hence the use of the purple/lilac versions in the 4 LP box set 'Four Shades Of Donovan' - it was a way for parent company Pye to shift more back stock of HMS, Open Road (present in Four Shades in its original orange incarnation) and Donovan's Greatest Hits.
Open Road, incidentally, only appeared in the UK in orange and later (rarely) 'rising sun' Dawn label designs. There was no purple/lilac pressing for the album.
Okay, upon further investigation Dawn changed from the orange to the purple label somewhere in 1971. HMS Donovan was released in July 1971. My suggestion would be the label change happened midway through the pressing of HMS Donovan. Quite a fanciful hypothesis is it not? http://imgur.com/a/2J4B8
I'm surprised to hear that. I was a huge Donovan fan and when I heard this album was coming out had one specifically imported to Oz from the U.K. If there was a label change in the space of 4 weeks from release, I'll accept it. Will have to do a little research on this to find out what's what.
