Benny Goodman was a renowned clarinet player, and a pioneer who had made jazz-style music accepted by most Americans during the Swing era of the 1930s after the prosperity of his Carnegie Hall jazz concert that took place 16 January 1938.

Though acetate recordings of this concert were done, the sound quality was rather poor due to the recording technology at that time. These recordings were believed to be lost until the sister-in-law of Mr. Goodman found these tapes at his apartment in New York City, and notified him that these tapes could still be transferred to vinyl-type media.

Despite the fact that this MGM disc and the two following discs, MGM E-3789 and MGM E-3790 did not sell well, all the tunes of these three discs were performance recordings that were done from 1937 to 1938 by the original orchestra trio of Mr. Goodman. Finally, the front and reverse jackets of this disc indicate the subtitle Volume 1 in the treasure chest series of 3.
