Notes

George Shearing was a jazz pianist who was prosperous in both his native country of the United Kingdom and in the United States. Though Mr. Shearing was born blind, he composed more than 300 jazz titles, such as the “Lullaby of Birdland” and “Conception.”

In the United Kingdom, Mr. Shearing had performed in the Harry Parry and the Stefan Grappelli band during the second world war. Consequently, Mr. Shearing had won the top pianist rating six consecutive times by means of the Melody Maker music magazine polls. In the United States, Mr. Shearing was contracted to record with MGM records thru which his quintet band had recorded “September in the Rain”, which had sold nearly one million copies.

Though the majority of tunes of this MGM disc of 33.33 were from diverse successful motion pictures and theater productions, this disc did not sell well, but Mr. Shearing was one of the most prosperous jazz pianist and composer despite the fact that he had to overcome his blindness. Finally, this was the first MGM disc of 33.33 rpm that was issued in 1960.
