Vinyl Album
Notes Produced by Percy "Thrills" Thrillington. Orchestra arranged and conducted by Richard Hewson. Card inner sleeve with Thrillington in the top left-hand corner. Sleeve Note - Clint Harrigan. From www.45cat.com: The Thrillington album was recorded on 15 – 17 June 1971 and was a result of McCartney wanting to do a big-band version of Ram. To help him realise the project he approached Richard Hewson, who had arranged “Those Were The Days”, McCartney’s song for Mary Hopkin, McCartney gave Hewson the freedom to orchestrate the songs however he wanted; the only stipulation was that Hewson recorded with a small “pops” orchestra. The album was not released until 1977, at the height of punk rock. To promote both the single and the album MPL placed cryptic advertisements in the personal columns of the UK newspapers The Evening Standard and The Times. This eventually led to an article in the Standard that attempted to uncover the identity of Thrillington. The album and accompanying single were released in the UK by Regal Zonophone. The album cover painting, by Jeff Cummings, depicted a violinist with a ram’s head. Cummings continued this theme on the back cover and included McCartney’s face, reflected in the window dividing the control room from the studio floor – a clear clue to McCartney’s involvement. In the USA Capitol issued the album with purple Capitol labels. Thrillington was released on CD on 1 May 1995 as a digital remaster, but was deleted relatively quickly. It was reissued on 7 June 2004 with identical packaging and artwork to the original, the only difference was “MADE IN THE EU” at the bottom centre of the CD label, replacing “MADE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM".
