Notes Moran Lee “Dock” Boggs was an “old time” singer and banjo player, who had a style of singing and playing the banjo that was considered a unique combination of Appalachian folk music and African-American blues. Even though Mr. Boggs had worked in the coal mining industry, he continued to practice the banjo-playing to where he earned a contract to record songs at Brunswick records in New York City. When Mr. Boggs earned enough money to exclusively concentrate on his musical talents, he quit working in the coal mining industry. For a few years, Mr. Boggs had travelled quite often to different areas of the United States to increase his chances to become a renowned musician. As the stock market crash of 1929 and the great depression occurred, Mr. Boggs had travelled to Chicago to record tunes at Lonesome Ace records, but he could not profit any money to the great depression. Even though Mr. Boggs was offered various recording auditions over the next few years, he was unable to cover his travelling expenses. Accordingly, he had pawned his banjo and had given up professionally playing music. Three decades later in June 1963, the folk music scholar Mike Seeger sought out and learned that Mr. Boggs had repurchased a banjo and had continued to play that banjo for several months before Mr. Seeger found him. After Mr. Seeger had urged that Mr. Boggs to play at the American Folk Festival in Ashville, North Carolina, Mr. Boggs played so well that he decided to professionally record music again. Consequently, Mr. Boggs had recorded three discs of 33.33 rpm at Folkways Music in New York City even though none of these discs sold well. Finally, without the guidance and encouragement of Mr. Seeger, Mr. Boggs would never have achieved any type of musical career. Images
