"A Hand is on the Gate" is a dramatic production that had focused on Afro-American music and poetry, which were types of empowerment that these determined brave souls had utilized to oust the oppression of Afro-Americans who were brutally treated by white supremacists in the southern part of the United States for many decades.

This production which was featured at the Longacre Theater, only had ten performances which lasted from the 21 September to the 1 October 1966. Surprisingly, so many spectators were greatly impressed by this performance that these spectators had donated $7000 worth of emergency contributions to keep this production ongoing for an unspecified period of time.

Though this disc had poorly sold, it has become a highly sought-after disc for anybody who enjoys such unique poetry and music of dedicated African-Americans who had tirelessly worked to eliminate racial segregation.

Lastly, this was the final LP disc of the 9000 numbering series of the Verve Folkways.
