Regarding The West Coast, Motown was using L.A. studios in the mid-60s for a small proportion of their recordings (often with overdubs done later in Detroit), as can be seen by the recording details on view at the Don't Forget The Motor City website.
They would've had to keep Hitsville open if Martha was to cut any new records. According to the lady herself, when Motown packed up & left for the West Coast, they never even bothered to tell her...
It's good to see Motown was still using their original Detroit "Hitsville" studios in 1972, even after establishing their MoWest studios in Hollywood in 1971.
