Oops, I misremembered the story slightly - I should have checked the 45cat entry for "The Click Song". Gallo originally demanded $75000 to let Miriam out of the deal, but RCA and Harry Belafonte beat them down to $45000.

According to the 1974 Decca main catalogue, the release date for this is March 1961. This LP has a bit of a history - despite the cover and label note saying "Recorded for Gallo" (a slight difference from London's usual "Recorded By (label)", this was actually Miriam's first album for RCA Victor, whom she had signed with though still under contract to Gallo Records in South Africa, and whose Webster Hall facility was the recording location. It took a bit of negotiation (and a sweetener of $75000) to extricate Miriam from that deal, but supposedly Gallo (who had longstanding reciprocal agreements with Decca-London) got to keep the rights to this record outside the US, though these tracks have turned up on non-US RCA reissues and compilations since. What I am wondering, though, is why "The Click Song"/"Mbube" weren't issued on a UK London single until 1963. Speaking of "Mbube". The Chad Mitchell Trio (like Miriam, also clients of Harry Belafonte's production company) provided additional background vocals, with Chad Mitchell's tenor easily recognisable.
