compiled mostly from tracks originally recorded as singles from the mid-sixties through the early seventies, plus "the harder they come" written and recorded by jimmy cliff for the film; these have various producers, including derrick harriot, leslie kong, and jimmy cliff.

- the composition of some of the songs is given somewhat variously, not helped by several jamaican songwriters of the sixties' penchant for using nicknames and aliases, for various reasons. frederick "toots" hibbert became the recognised front man in his band's later name, "toots and the maytals", whilst brent dowe's co-writer on "rivers of babylon" is given both as trevor, and as james mcnaughton (and also as f. mcnaughton). the personnel of the slickers varied, with only derrick crooks being in all line-ups.

- the unanticipated escalation of the cost of making the film pushed island records and chris blackwell close to the financial edge, and forced a retrenchment at the record company during which some fine, but commercially insufficiently successful artists were "let go" when targeted advertising failed to increase their albums' sales.
