Further moseying reveals this was available with every Island label design, so must have been constantly pressed or re-issued. (Must have been quite popular then)

You certainly get your money's worth here!

It came in at around 53mins and 30 seconds of music (With a full 8 mins + of Heavy Jelly), so not the edited down half hearted comp I was expecting, but a good way for a vinyl pauper like myself to get the likes of King Crimson, Nick Drake, and... well, pretty much all of these artists on the "white i" Pink Island label (Lovely to see it floating serenely around my spindle while 21st Schizoid Man chugs out of my speakers).

And it's a lovely thick piece of vinyl too.

...But there are compromises with that:

Some of the tracks are very quiet compared to others, with most of Side 1 being quite muted (I had to crank up the recording level a bit), but the Free track, and Heavy Jelly quite loud.

Side 2 is a lot better volume wise.

The tracks are very well chosen selections, and go well together, except, oddly, the Nick Drake song, which doesn't really sit well next between Traffic and King Crimson, and would perhaps have been better on a different compilation of more reserved music (As could the Strangely Strange track, strangely enough).

And as I am only just dipping a toe in the Court of The Crimson King (Or poking a Jethro in the Crimson King's Court (?)), this is a fantastic introduction album.

But the most surprising thing about it, is that the best track on here is the Blodwyn Pig song: Sing Me A Song That I Know... what a cracking song!

I'd heard their name in Record Collecting circles before (Particularly the album: Ahead Rings Out), but they were always a little obscure for me... But I was bouncing around the room like a rugby ball to that one! Quite a compulsive tune and even a little funky.

For that track to stand out on this album, given the company it's keeping here, is no mean feat.

I've seen copies of this on ebay with the Pink Rim Island label too... but worth getting for these tunes and to have an example of the label in your collection on a budget.

thejudge: thank-you, twice - er, four times (quadrice?). (i'm still a command-line dos-er at heart, preferring to do my own trype-ups...)

"heavy jelly"'s "i keep singing..." was released on island single WIP 6049 b/w "blue".
"heavy jelly" are identified on 45cat.com's heavy jelly discog as skip bifferty (in a clever plastic disguise) but they started off as an in-joke/hoax by two music paper journalists writing reviews of live performances that'd not actually taken place, by a non-existent band heavier than the heaviest ever, then or future...

My copy still has the "14/6" sticker on it - Happy Days!
