Although featuring Various Artists this album is generally referred to as being a Walter Carlos (later to become Wendy Carlos) release.
The uncredited track A4 is a recording by Ferenc Fricsay and B8 is a 1963 recording by Von Karagen.
Some UK produced sleeves/inner sleeves, for K 46127 were shipped from supplier with Canadian pressed vinyl (catalogue number BS 2573), imported by Warner Bros. to satisfy demand for this release.
I got it at a bootie the other week, and it is quite rare.... I get the impression Deutsche Grammophon jumped the gun a bit in putting out the compilation of their released recordings under the movie title branding, and then Warners told them they intended to release this instead, so would they kindly hoist theirs off the market.
(all speculation of course... but it seems to make sense)
It would seem to have the Fricsay recording details you seek too.
I really like YankeeDisc's idea about the additional comment - duly added.
After all, if someone is interested in the US or Canadian issues they will look there.
Anyone interested in the UK version will find an extra bit of information in the spot where it should be found.
"Wouldn't it be better to have the artist credit as "Soundtrack" or "Soundtrack - Clockwork Orange" posted by davie gordon 11-Sep-13.
....a voice of sensibility.
Walter Carlos' name should be stricken from the artist title, and Various Artists substituted.
My own sub for 'Across 110th Street' included the line 'Original Motion Picture Score', and surely this album K 46127, is also by various artists, and an original motion picture score, and in my opinion, should be described along the same lines. Bobby Womack wrote and performed on most of the tracks, yet it is not a B. Womack album, and he still gets credited as an artist.
Walter Carlos would still gets his credits on the main menu as an artist, and his name does not appear anywhere on the main titles to the album.
The title is, unambiguously.... copied from the label....
Music From The Soundtrack
-------Stanley Kubrick's---------
----"A Clockwork Orange"-----
----"A Warner Bros. Film"------
....thus far, we have four copies of this release, two (full english) owned by one of our esteemed band of, and IMO a very fair moderator. The other two copies are owned by recalcitrants, my word, and I hope I do not offend Graham7 with that handle I duly bestow on the two of us.....
We, the latter, have the copies, with boo, hiss, Canadian pressings, packaged inside British sleeve and inlay sleeve.
If it is deemed necessary to move that which we own over to Canada, I for one will continue to claim my copy K 46127 as owned by me, the British copy. I have no interest whatsoever in the Canadian connotation, which is the fault of the manufacturer and distributor, in allowing this error to have taken place in the first instance.
In future, when copies of BS 2573 are subbed, whether or not they are US or Canadian issues, they must have separate entries, logically.
For further reading on this subject, Discogs has a master list of 45 versions of this album, including a few quirky ones.
One UK issue entry justifies this release as "Vinyl, LP, Sampler ", you couldn't make it up.
I also own a copy of the "Canadian Issue", and whilst the vinyl is Canadian pressed, the LP sleeve is UK and so is the white paper inner sleeve.
...that does not make it a Canadian issue in my book.
We can go the route of Discogs where some d***head subbed an album as a complete new entry, just because they included the spine catalogue number, which showed (0698), and that's the recommended retail price in dollars........it stood.
The culprit here is the record company, who in their mad dash for profit, and caught out, perhaps for paper labels, imported and sold this Canadian pressed vinyl in UK sleeve, so as not to miss out on sales.
......they could have easily included a 65mm X 19mm sticker stating "vinyl manufactured in Canada - part of K 46127 issue, all UK rights reserved", and stuck them on both sides of the album labels where there is plenty of room, but they did not bother.
To me, just a line in notes should suffice......
"Some UK produced sleeves/inner sleeves, for K 46127 were shipped from supplier with Canadian pressed vinyl, imported by Warner Bros. to satisfy demand for this release."
This is what keeps me away from Album World, the amount of typing required (or in this case, copy/paste), so if someone else wants to add it, that's fine.
Once the button exists, that enables one to "Copy Track Details From Existing Album" I'd be happy to. Is this coming soon?
The Canadian label issue seems to be agreed to be fundamentally a UK LP but I think it should have its own entry due to the different catalogue numbers.
Graham7, you added the labels, would you like to do the honours?
As the main featured artist is Walter Carlos, I'd be inclined to leave it this way, for this LP.
But, I agree, a preferred Artist Name for Original Soundtrack Recordings should be decided upon.
I've added a further scan of part of the back cover: Walter Carlos - a Biographical Sketch by Phillip Ramey, for those who'd like to read it.
I have another Walter Carlos LP somewhere - just wish I could find it!
Wouldn't it be better to have the artist credit as "Soundtrack" or "Soundtrack - Clockwork Orange" ? There are thousands of soundtrack albums out there, mostly with multiple artists, so we'd be better off arriving at a consensus while were still in the early stages of the album database.
@Graham7, @YankeeDisc, as I was the first to enter this album, I entered what was on the cover and label (Stereo), by the 70s I thought all recordings would have been stereo, not a problem with me to change to LP.
Label scans added here of my Canadian made copy.
I agree, it does now seem likely to be a UK issue. Plain white inner has Made In Great Britain printed on it
The dead wax markings vary on mine.
Side A is as described by Yankee Disc : BS 2573A 40039-1B and C2-G
Side B has just 40040-1D and 2-GO (or 2-G0)
Oh, and the label shows 1972 instead of 1971.
PS. Why is this described as a Stereo LP? - do Mono copies exist?
....just located my copy, and it is the same version as owned by Graham7, a UK issue sleeve K 46127, manufactured by Shorepak, as on the scan above, but the vinyl is Canadian, cat.# BS 2573 (S40039, S40040), with the "Burbank Trees" labels with rim print "Manufactured And Distributed By WEA Music Of Canada Ltd."
The dead wax replicates in hand etching the cat.#'s/matrices above, BS 2573Aspace40039 1B BS 2573Bspace40040 1C
There is also C2-G hand etched on Side A and Side B, at a separate position to the other etchings.
Obviously imported to satisfy demand, I'm not so sure it should be listed as a Canadian issue, as that may differ, if one ever turns up.
...scan # 3261 by Graham7 makes extreme good sense to me, when executed on behalf of those that require archival proof, that can be read.
I'm not against scans of whole of front/rear/inner sleeves per se, but we're up against it if "we" think that alone will suffice.
I will not post any scans of sleeves unless I believe that they are up to a certain standard, and can actually be of use to browsers from wherever, which I am assuming is surely the purpose of this site, to archive LP albums to the highest quality.....
Have added a scan showing just part of the back cover, hopefully the track credits as printed can be read more easily.
I was all set to add a label variation, when I saw that mine was a Canadian issue (in a UK sleeve) so I'll add it as new.
Before I do, is it better to have Not Credited, and other uncredited artists, listed under a consistent heading, such as [No Artist Listed]?
@sladesounds, thanks for that, I have now added back cover and A. B. side of label, was not sure what to add as the back cover shows.
Interesting about Walter Carlos / Wendy Carlos, followed the same path as Walter (Wally) Stott / Angela Morley.
A4 ?, can not see anything with Ferenc Fricsay on cover,
only "Performance: A Deutsche Grammophon Recording" as on A2, B6, B8.
