I'd been wary of Lennon's solo work, as (and you will forgive this opinion) it always seemed a lot of sentimental drippy mawkish nonsense from a man who lost his bite. Of course, he could still write a tune, but I reckon there's only one, maybe two decent songs from him on each of the three albums I've now experienced (Imagine, Mind Games, and this), and my opinion has not changed I'm sorry to say. He seemed to regress from the absolute cutting edge of popular music, pushing boundaries and seemingly seeing more than most mortals could, to a weak fifties rock 'n' roll nostalgia. ...It's OK but far from great, and when you start offering albums all about yourself and your own relationships in this kind of specific way, that allows no room for the listening audience to relate to, then it's self indulgent nonsense, albeit set to a catchy tune (Write a s song about Rhonda, or Alice, or almost any other girl's (Or boy's) name, and it's accessible, but I don't know about you, but I don't know many Yokos, and probably never will.). And that's the problem with this, and the surprising problem at that, in that Yoko herself sounds much more in tune with the times this was made than John, and this only serves to emphasise the sense of a burnt out rock star going backwards. Of course, Yokos's stuff is mad as a bag o' spanners, and I haven't stopped laughing at her extended orgasm throughout most of Kiss Kiss Kiss, but she has a kind of so bad it's almost good Toyah-esque wobbly awful vocalising, but oddly, it grows on you, and certainly sounds fresher, and more forward thinking than John's work. So oddly, I come away from this more of a Yoko Ono Fan than John Lennon fan (Ah Blasphemy!). ...Now there's a surprise. ✔︎ Helpful Review? | |
