Very strange indeed. I just checked the inserts for the 12" promo set for this record (with an interview record and a 5-track 12") and one of the inserts features a discography with the number L-3… while the other insert shows the number L-4….
The Australian gold award for this record (dated April 1989) also shows the labels from the L-3…. version.
Oh, and as far as I know, there never was a single CD for this, only doubles.
At a guess, I would say that the change in catalogue numbers is due to a reduction in retail price and/or standardisation of numbers between the LP and CD releases. Festival's numbers in the 3xxxx range were for full-price single albums, with doubles usually in the 45xxx or 70xxx ranges, but this probably went into the 3xxx range when released on single? CD (as did another Festival-distributed release, Creedence Clearwater Revival's CHRONICLE), so they changed the LP number to match, and to fit into the appropriate price range.
This record seems identical to the the other Australian release L-45975/6 of this record. Just the catalogue numbers are different.
The higher catalogue number L-45975/6 even seems to be pressed before this number L-38939.
Anybody knows what the story is for these 2 releases?
