Exile Stones 19th Nov 2022
| | I just read about matrix numbers on the "Stones on Decca" website. Very interesting stuff.
https://stonesondecca.com/basic-lp-info/matrix-numbers
I know the original US "Out of Our Heads" is on the 'London Label.'
The last section of Jan Richardson's Stones on Decca Matrix Number page is "Things to consider when collecting Matrix numbers and first pressings."
Jan writes, "Most of the time it is impossible to determine if a record is a first or later pressing only by looking at the matrix and stamper numbers." And also, "You cannot confirm when a record has been pressed only by looking at the Matrix numbers. You need to take all other indicators into consideration. |

| | I guess the only way to know what is THEE original US Out of our Heads is to have the correct matrix numbers. How do we know what is the correct matrix numbers?
The real gig thing about finding the 1st pressing isn't just the great sound, it's finding the rare "Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man." It is the linger uncensored version with a different, longer bluesy mix. Brian Jones' harmonica is way up front.
There was the longer uncensored "Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man" released in 1989 "The Singles Collection - The London Tears" but it's not the same mix.
++
Nobody has absolutely identified the 1st pressing for the US market of "Out of Our Heads" on Discogs.
From a lot of research, I know the original US "Out of Our Heads" is on the London label (Mono, FFRR LL 3429). It was "MADE IN ENGLAND BY DECCA..." I guess it should have the boxed "LONDON ffrr" logo. I've seen three different labels that are almost identical. One version's label has brackets around the upside-down matrix number above the catalog number, the other doesn't and another uses parentheses.
Here are two versions claiming to be the 1st US "Out of Our Heads." https://www.discogs.com/release/4917552-The-Rolling-Stones-Out-Of-Our-Heads & https://www.discogs.com/release/3910787-The-Rolling-Stones-Out-Of-Our-Heads . Both have the deep grove label. They both spell "unauthorised" with s on the bottom of the label. The BIG THING about this 1st pressing is it should have the longer version of "The West Coast Under assistant Promo Man." The only way to really know is to play "The West Coast Under assistant Promo Man" and check the time to see if it's 3.40 NOT 3.10. Don't go by what was printed on the back cover. |

| | Added cover, inner sleeve and label images fmc. I believe this is a 1st pressing indicated by the Made in England by the Decca Record Co. LTD. on top of label. This is my favorite Stones album of all time. Side A Dead Wax reads XARL-6791-3A, Side B Dead Wax reads XARL-6792-2A. |
