| Paul Goldstein1 18th Aug 2018 | Now that Aretha has sadly departed, I thought I would stress that her career did not begin in the late sixties with her classic hits, but over 10 years earlier when she made these ultra great live performances in her father's church when she was 14. This was Aretha in the raw, before she got criminally refined. Her voice was already mature, although you could notice a slight childhood on an occasional note. But here. you can hear the full extent and energy of Aretha and her Gospel roots and it's intensity, with the Gospel shouts in the background. This is where it all began, and this is where she really explodes, She could never have replicated this full raw live atmosphere in the studio. Aretha at her greatest. It was reissued on Chess or Universal on CD as Aretha Gospel, but Don't buy any of this material on any of those shoddy out-of-copyright labels who specialize in anything over 50 years old up to 1962, and is therefore no longer in copyright, but often dubbed from other CDs or worse still, scratchy old vinyl. Continue to listen to her later material by all means, but not without hearing this first. | |
