Notes The establishment of Brasil ’66 had begun in Ipanema in 1961 when Sergio Mendes had formed the sextet Bossa Rio and had recorded his first album which was called “Dance Moderno.” As Mr. Mendes had continued to frequently travel to North America, he became so impressed with the United States/Latin musical fusion of Stan Getz that Mr. Mendes became motivated by musical desires and money to make Brazilian jazz popular music a prosperity for him. Near the end of 1964, Mr. Mendes had relocated to the United States with a lawyer named Richard Adler, who became his manager. Both Mr. Mendes and Mr. Adler had founded the group, Brasil ’65, which consisted of the Sergio Mendes trio and two songstresses named Wanda Sa and Rosinha de Valenca. Also, this group had recorded discs of 33.33 giri by means of Atlantic and Capitol records. Even though every jazz record that Mr. Mendes had recorded for Atlantic Records had low sales, Mr. Adler had suggested that Mr. Mendes and his group sing in both the Portuguese and English languages. Furthermore, Mr. Adler had advised that the group find two American songstresses who could sing in both English and Portuguese. Afterward, Herb Alpert had arranged an audition for the Brasil ’65 group, which eventually became the Brasil ’66 group name. After Herb Alpert had signed the Brasil ’66 group to the A and M label, this group had a prosperous hit “Mas Que Nada”, which was the a-side of their first disc of 45 rpm. At this point, the group members were Sergio Mendes (piano), Lani Hall and Bibi Vogel (vocals), Bob Matthews (bass), Jose Soares (percussion) and Joao Palma (drum). This is the first A and M disc of 33.33 rpm of Brasil ’66 which had sold so well that this disc was certified platinum. Though this disc not a highly sought-after collectible, this disc had marked the first time that Mr. Mendes became a big prosperity of the music industry in the United States. Images
