BB Album Reviews: September 30, 1967

Though this A&M disc catalog #, LP-2001, appears non-sequential to the A & M disc of 33.33 rpm popular-series monaural catalog #s (1xx), this means that this 4 digit catalog # is of the A & M/CTI Jazz Series, which was started in 1967 by record producer Creed Taylor, who had brought Wes Montgomery and other jazz artists to this new label.

John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery had begun to play jazz music in the 1943 after he had purchased a six-string guitar. Though Mr. Montgomery had no formal music training and was unable to read sheet music, he had progressed so well that he played at a night club in Indianapolis while he worked at a milk company during the day.

Despite the prosperity of his guitar playing, Mr. Montgomery still needed to work a different job during the day due to the fact that he could earn six-figure salaries that other musicians, such as Charles Mingus and Lionel Hampton. For some time, the majority of jazz LPs of Mr. Montgomery did not sell well until Creed Taylor had brought him to A & M records.

Under Mr. Taylor, Mr. Montgomery had become such a prosperous musician that this A & M disc had sold millions of copies. Plus, he played at more jazz festivals in 1968 than he had in the previous twenty-five years until he passed later that year.

Produced by Creed Taylor
Arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky
Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey; June 6, 7, 8 and 26, 1967
Engineer: Rudy Van Gelder
