Thanks for the input on these "grey" areas nboldock it is often hard to decide when entering an album and you have more than one seemingly correct option. I will enter another similar release (Beserkley/Rhino) in the opposite fashion and I think that it will suit that release better. We'll see I suppose and yes this is a great album.
Putting aside the whole CD question for a second (getting cold sweats about that already), firstly don't worry about this being pressed in Holland. CBS pressed lots of records in Holland in the 80s/90s, as Phil said, but they weren't necessarily intended *solely* for the Dutch market, or at all.
As Bear Family are an indie label, based in Germany (notwithstanding their link-up with CBS on this release), I think it is fine to leave this under Germany. It was certainly released there by the looks of things (note GEMA licensing and indeed German language text on the labels) and with independent labels there is a certain benefit in grouping all releases together under the country of origin anyway (see Glitterhouse for another example on this world, or hop over to 45Cat and see Sub Pop and others).
HI Lee, I think an International option is certainly needed, especially if this site comes up with CD World, as so many CD's were made in Europe or Japan and distributed internationally, though not necessarily worldwide. The Made In Holland is fairly common on UK and European issues in the 1980's, by the way, and even on some US issues - after PolyGram bought Decca in January 1980, the Decca factory at New Malden in Surrey was sold off and production was shifted to Holland, and I have issues of Schwann from that period with adverts for US London classical reissues trumpeting the fact that they were made in Holland, so yet another trap for the unwary! Hopefully, most of these things show the address of the local company on the sleeve, to indicate the intended market, so all Bear Family could be entered as Germany, even though that may not be the entire truth in some cases. Similarly, UK Ace/Kent and associated labels could all be entered as UK, even if their discs were mostly made in Germany during the 80's, and their catalogues stated which countries each release could be shipped to, depending on the terms of the licensing deals they made.
Yeah, Phil, it was a toss up and worse still the albums (this and the other Bear Family Maddox Bros. & Rose I entered) are actually made in Holland. To further confuse things I think The Bear Family's modus operandi was to make things available globally for specific specialist markets, so then, does that make the world the intended place of release? See what the Mods think and I'll amend the notes when I'm done entering albums.
I hate this sort of thing! Not the music - LP's where it's a toss-up as to which the primary label and catalogue number are! All in all, it seems to me that Bear Family are the ones who actually put it out, notwithstanding the CBS Special Products labels on the record, so I would make Bear Family and its number BFX 15076 primary, and CBS Special Products and its number second. It belongs in both catalogues, so whatever way you do it is fine as long as it can be searched for under either label or number.
Wild hillbilly music at its best, a foot stompin', hand clappin', hootin' and a hollerin' good time. Fantastic playing and a healthy sense of humour, brilliant!
