Notes

The Diamonds became a group in 1953 when member Dave Somerville was employed a sound engineer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto. The members, who were Dave Somerville, Ted Kowalski Phil Levitt and Bill Reed, had first performed in the basement of the church of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Toronto where this group sang in a Christmas minstrel show. After the Diamonds had received so many positive reactions from the audience members that this group had decided to professionally record and perform.

After this group had practiced for a year and a half, they had relocated to New York City where they won the guest artist status by means of the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout Show for one week. Later, the Diamonds had secured a recording contract with Coral Records where Nat Goodman became their manager. Even though the Diamonds only recorded four songs with this record company, they had traveled to Cleveland to audition with Bill Randle who was a Cleveland-based disc jockey. Accordingly, Mr. Randle was so impressed with the performance of the Diamonds that he presented this group to a producer of Mercury Records who had secured them a recording contract.

Within a few weeks, this group had a big success with the tune Little Darlin’, which was originally written and recorded by the Gladiolas who later became Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Additionally, this group had recorded their own rendition of Words Of Love that was composed by Buddy Holly. Toward the end of 1957, the Stroll became another ultra-popular song of the Diamonds.

For the most part, the Diamonds had recorded popular-style renditions of doo wop tunes, such as The Church Bells May Ring, Walking Along and Silhouettes that were previously recorded by various groups of that genre. After She Say (Um Dubbi Dum) became the final success of this group, they no longer had national hit parade success with the tunes that they recorded.
