The above is the original album of Academy Award winning songs recorded by Connie Francis, in Rome, in April 1962, with original backings as provided by the Geoff Love Orchestra, and which was planned for release in the US as CONNIE FRANCIS SINGS "MOON RIVER" AND OTHER ADADEMY AWARD WINNERS. Cover slicks for the original compilation had been prepared and the album mastered, but its release postponed. In the interim period, however, new backings were given to the Connie Francis vocals and these "overdubbed" accompaniments appear on nearly all the worldwide releases of the above titles. The album title was eventually changed to CONNIE FRANCIS SINGS AWARD WINNING MOTION PICTURE HITS and, under this name, the 12 original performances were marketed in Australia and New Zealand. The timing of this Australian release was particularly fortunate. Just one day later, on March 22nd, 1963, Connie recorded THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, which had won the 1962 Best Song Oscar at the Award ceremony held that month. Had EMI released either MODERN ITALIAN HITS or FOLLOW THE BOYS - both of which were "in line" for Australia - it is almost certain AWARD WINNING MOTION PICTURE HITS would have been merely a locally pressed 13-track overdubbed package. As well as the superior Geoff Love orchestrations, this album set also includes a complete recording of OVER THE RAINBOW which, at the time, after 30 years remained exclusive to the southern hemisphere.

An identical compilation to this album was also issued by southern hemisphere "neighbor" New Zealand by HIS MASTER'S VOICE (NZ) [part of the EMI group] on mono MGM MC 6135 and stereo MCS 5017.
