Maybe it could have been called "Gladys Knight Presents The Jackson 5" instead!!
The first Motowners to have "discovered" the J5 were Gladys Knight & The Pips, they recommended them to Bobby Taylor who arranged for them to have an audition at Motown and then mentored them for a few months (apparently they stayed at his home while he polished off their rougher musical edges) before producing a couple of tracks on them ... notably "Who's Loving You" in July 1969.
Then the powers at Motown decided the group needed a major push (I think the $ signs lit up in Berry Gordy's eyes when he realised how big they could be) took over production duties from Bobby Taylor, wrote "I Want You Back" and issued it as a 45 at the end of October 1969.
The decision to attach Diana Ross's name to this LP was probably Berry Gordy's, she famously got on very well with the group and was about to leave The Supremes so what better way to promote her solo career than associating her with the upcoming stars.
As mentioned, Bobby Taylor has never forgiven Miss Ross, and seems to have less regard for her than something he might scrape off his shoe.
This LP should've by rights had the title "Bobby Taylor Presents The Jackson 5". After all, it WAS Taylor, not Ross, who really discovered this group. Bobby Taylor is still bitter - and quite rightly so - about being denied due recognition here for discovering the J-5. Being given the production credit for the LP does not make up in any way for being denied proper recognition for discovery of a major talent.
