Phil, I stand(or sit) corrected!, The playing time for "Papa...." is 6 minutes, 58 seconds. It's the last of only 5 tracks on Side 6 of "Anthology" - The Temptations(10th Anniversary Album), issued on Motown as M-782A3 in 1973(being The Temptations, you'd expect this to be on the Gordy label, wouldn't you?). I just remembered - I visited a record fair at Speers Point(Lake MacQuarie area, south of Newcastle NSW, Australia) a few years ago, I recall seeing a German 45rpm of "Papa..." I think it was Pt.1 and Pt.2, spread across both sides of the disc with a total playing of(possibly) 11.45.

Neil, are you sure about that? My copy of ANTHOLOGY (bought in 1975, I think) has the single edit of "Papa" - I just played it to make sure. It would have been a very tight squeeze to get the 11:45 version on there! Manufactured by RCA Hollywood, if that makes any difference.

There was a three-disc anthology of The Temptations issued in 1973, not on the Gordy label, as you'd expect, but on Motown, and the sides were coupled in "changer order" - 1 to 6, 2 to 5, 3 to 4. The complete 11.45 version is on that set though not in true stereo but the synthetic stereo instead.

I sure as hell don't miss those cassettes. I kinda like being able to edit digitally and make my own CDs.

It would be interesting to hear this version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". Looking at the label scan the version of "Papa" on here is 6:36.
On the "All Directions" L.P. that has the full length version it is timed at 11:45 as can be seen here so this looks to be a version with the vocal segments edited out.

I used to make single edit of my own years ago I used the instrumental as the b side oh how I miss those ten minute cassettes

Hi, Phil. "Papa" vocals edited out, ay? Just to 'create' an instrumental out of a vocal track. Suppose they did that with Rare Earth's version of "Get Ready" too! Those dirty cheats!(ha-ha)

Release date is wrong here - the back cover says (C) 1977, and the discography in Sharon Davis' MOTOWN: THE HISTORY gives the release date as March 1978, and that discography was compiled by Motown's UK label manager, so presumably he could get access to the necessary documentation. Neil, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is all instrumental here, as the vocals have been edited out.

I was wondering where you got to, R.C.! "Papa..." was even better if you needed a toilet break.(ran better than 6 minutes to the best of my knowledge).

I don't think "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by The Temptations should be in this compilation. Though it has a long intro, it's a vocal...
It was the 3rd of September,
A day I'll always remember,
'Cos that was the day
That my Daddy died....

The opening four lines to the song. Issued 1971.
(with due acknowledgments to composers Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong)
