Now that George's Apple/Parlophone contract had expired, EMI were left with the option to recycle his earlier solo material. Having already released compilations of John's and Ringo's singles material, EMI put together this half group/half solo compilation without George's involvement. George was very annoyed that EMI had used his earlier Beatles material rather than drawing from his solo catalogue, seeing the move as an insinuation that his solo material had not yielded sufficient hits. George had suggested a title, as well as song selection for the release, but EMI ignored him. So he disowned the record, which didn't sell anyway (never even entering the charts).

The album sleeve was designed by Cream, with a front cover photograph by Bob Cato, and an inner sleeve photograph by Michael Putland. The record appeared on the black and silver Parlophone label, the first Beatle solo album to do so, and the record contains the inner groove engravings - "A NICKY CUT" on the "A" side and "NICK W." on the "B" side.
