From the book “The Hollies: Riding The Carousel”

“Initially scheduled for an April 1973 release (but finally appearing in September), the twelve-track selection covered the US hits for both Imperial Records and Epic and, unlike the previous Imperial “hits” set, was made up completely of songs that the US audiences would be familiar with, choosing only to omit ‘Jennifer Eccles’ from the final assortment.”

So I think it’s safe to say this was a September of 1973 release.

While I agree with on the cover, it is the first time we got the Imperial tracks in true stereo. Maybe that was the reason for this release.

What a frustrating release this was. Crappy cover art, inadequate song selection, liner notes with inaccurate info, and a general feeling of why? Epic should have recorded the band on their US tour and put out a live album. They gave Poco a live album why not The Hollies? Terrible missed opportunity here.

Hi Switchtoglide, I've had another look at this in view of your comments, and both Cash Box and Billboard reviewed this in October (6th for CB, 13th for BB) - apparently no review in Record World. I am wondering whether you might actually be thinking of the band's ROMANY album, which seems to have been released at the end of January 1973? They don't appear to have had any release in April. Another possibility is that one of the Columbia plants might still have been using up yellow labels as late as October.

i was in the Record Store business when this was released. It was April 1973 and the first issue was still the YELLOW Epic label #KE-32061. This was just at the end of the yellow label before the switch to orange. Discogs, Wikipedia, etc. were wrong on the October release date...

Discogs has the orange label issue on KE 32061, with a release date of October 1973, probably correct as it entered the Billboard album chart the week of 20th October. However, I am a little suspicious of the front cover image shown there, as it doesn't show any Epic logo at all, though the Canadian issue does show the logo of the orange label, as this one does. Presuming that it wasn't released earlier (numerically, it comes well before Charlie Rich's BEHIND CLOSED DOORS album, which entered the chart in May), then I tend to think that the orange label was the first issue.

Added cover and label images for the PE 32061 catalog number. This would have been a 1979 or later pressing. Earlier pressings of PE 32061 would have been on the orange label. I think the original KE 32061 issue was about the time Epic changed from the yellow label to the orange label, so I suppose the first pressing of KE 32061 might have been on the yellow label.
