 Review
This album followed 'Caution Horses' which had a haunted breathlessness and set the standard pretty high. So this is the classic case of how to follow up a critical and artistic success. The first 4 tracks are a natural progression from the previous platter-there is a more electric feel but the tales of regret, hidden terrors and dreams of escape persist. The lyrics are superb (This life holds it's secrets, like a seashell holds the sea) (woman on the porches comparing alilbis) and the melodies are growers.
Then we have the classic carcrash when two artists that you admire collaborate and the result falls between two stools. John Prine is the culprit here, the song (If You were the Woman) doesn't suit his voice and it just drags. This is followed by a clumsy attempt to be Neil Young with loud guitars and obvious words.
The B-side is similar-the originals are generally very good, but the song especially written for the band by Townes van Zandt just doesn't fly-it flops.Final cover is absolutely brilliant and the pros outweigh the cons overall. Also nice to have a bit of 90's vinyl when it was basically being dropped by the majors. And yes Margo Timmins is photogenic as well as a top-notch singer. Conclusion-it stays.
