Notes

the singers & their songs were "collected" by friends robert forrester & norman alford of carlisle in late 1940s through early 1950s touring north cumberland by bike to sketch, fish & repair to local pubs in the evenings, where they encouraged locals to sing and play what they knew, and took part in the music-making themselves.
tom gray, librarian of tullie house library & museum, carlisle, contacted the bbc in newcastle upon tyne and forrester broadcast some of these on the bbc's regional programmes and, luckily, got jack little of carlisle to record this music.

originally recorded directly onto 78rpm acetates by this sound recording enthusiast, 8 through 10/1953 at the crown & thistle, rockliffe, and at the plough inn, wreay.

rediscovered by sue mycock in the county record(!)office, carlisle castle, 1975.
2pp (1 sheet) insert with liner notes, etc. by sue mycock.

produced & engineered by bernard whitty

sponsored & © by ellen valley band.

the "traditional" may sometimes be a shorthand for "i learned it off my father, who may've been taught it by his" - and the singers often had alternate titles for the songs, having learned different versions of them in various pubs. sue mycock's notes indicate these, where they were recalled, and also the names of the airs or tunes, where these have been identified.

"1975" is a best guess - the lp cannot have been issued earlier, and is unlikely to've been released later than 1976.

anyone want to ask in tullie house library & museum, carlisle?
