 I have finally solved the coding on the rear of many British LPs.

Most members recognise that the printers' name appears on the rear of the flip-back sleeve, together with a coding to signify date the date of manufacture of the sleeve.

In this instance the name Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. appears as the printer, and to the left of their name is a date code 6704 followed by LL.

6704 refers to 1967 April as the date of printing and manufacture of the LP sleeve, and that normally agrees with the original release date of the album.

The other code is the mystery.....LL is the code for the manufacturer of the "metal" parts known as the “Lacquer” which are supplied blank and then are cut normally using a Scully lathe, by a cutting engineer. From the “Lacquer” or "master" the “Mothers” & “Stampers” are formed, so the process ends up with the vinyl records being hot stamped.

In this instance the code LL is an unknown manufacturer, but a more common code is TPS, which I now know is a company called "The Plating Service", and has long puzzled me until recently......

I posted years ago in 2012 a link which describes the process of how a master tape from the mixing desk ends up as metal parts, mothers and stampers, so the vinyl can be pressed, and then sold on in the millions.....maybe.
