Label text reads: Mfd by E. A. Records for Phonogram in E. Africa. [E. A. Records is East African Records.] The disc was sold in the standard UK sleeve.
i think that the RHODESIA HITS OF THE WEEK and PICK OF THE POPS [both series on sale in Rhodesia back in the day] used the same recordings from the SPRINGBOK HITS series
Yep. Many countries had their own series going in the 1970s. There must have been about 80 Springbok, released on mfp in South Africa - none so far as I know contained recordings from the UK series. Pick of the Pops is one of many such UK series I will be uploading in due course, along with 12 Tops, Hot Hits, Pye Chartbusters, Parade of Pops, World Top 12 etc etc.
similar compilations from southern africa include the SPRINGBOK HITS series, the RHODESIA HITS OF THE WEEK series, and the PICK OF THE POPS series; similar type of production and vocal quality on all the aforegoing :-)
I know - it's amazing really. I've been researching it all for a few years now and collected loads from places like Argentina, New Zealand, Italy, Israel even Bulgaria. They'll all end up on here I hope, assuming I live that long!
Picked up on Ebay from a seller in India. If they hadn't included a scan of the label, I'd have just assumed it was the UK copy - the sleeve is identical, so lucky really. Got one from South Africa to upload too, when I get that far.
I have listed this as a Kenya release despite Kenya not being mentioned specifically on the record or sleeve. East African Records, who manufactured it, were based in Nairobi, so it is safe to assume it was sold in Kenya. However it might also have been sold in other countries in East Africa - it seems impossible to know which.
