This album would seem to be the gift that keeps on giving...

...As far as headaches are concerned.

Now that we have fairly well established that this is the first stereo issue of the album, in 1969 (hence the date on the labels), those boxed logo labels present a new one...

... As surely, having the same catalogue number and (matrix number above it), they ought to be simply a later label variation of this stereo issue (whether a re-press, or simple modified continuation of press), and that being so, should rightly remain on this page according to site convention.

......But that different date of 1971 would seem to make it a reissue - new product.

But why would it stilll have the same cat and matrices?

There must be some reason for the new published date being applied.

Anyone got any clues?

I'll leave those images here where they can be seen (along with this discussion) until a reason can be found for this.

Just added a scan from the CD Booklet which informs us that it wasn't accorded a Stereo issue until December 1969 so maybe the 1971 disc needs it's own entry as a re-issue

 Groovy :)

(Also being at least a little acquainted with Decca labels from classical records - ED 1s etc...I know that the rim text on the dark blue (ED = English Dark) reading "made in England by..." Replaced the original wording:. "original recording by..." In 1969).

I think that would be a very logical suggestion and your analysis would be correct

Somewhat befuddled by this one then...

... It would seem that the original 66 mono had no stereo counterpart on original release, only later introduced 69 alongside a reissue of the mono ...

(which would mean technically, that this stereo unboxed is not a reissue, but a first stereo issue)

... But that unboxed stereo label version must be incredibly rare, as my Decca catalogue must have been published immediately prior to 1969 (which doesn't even state the stereo would be available in that year) and the change over to boxed labels, which must already have been underway at Decca.

I asked the question originally in response to a correction request to have this stereo issue changed to 66, in line with the mono original, but I think it's best left as is for now at least, given this discussion.

@ Magic Marmalade. Added scan from The Great Rock Discography 7th Edition showing re-issue dates for Mono & Stereo in 1969. Added an image from a Decca Label website HERE saying this label was issued between Summer '68 and Late '69

Additionally, Decca introduced the boxed logo about 67 / 68 didn't they?

(Classical music records might have been earlier)

So the unboxed labels must pre-date 1969 anyway, so how would they have a 1969 date on them?

 ...The plot thickens!

... I just remembered I have the complete Decca label group catalogue for 1969 (It's huge! - knew it would come in handy one day :)...

... It only has the mono cat number version (LK 4808) listed in the mono column... nothing in the stereo releases column!

?????

 Very odd.

The mono red labels all give a patent of 66, surely the original patent covers all versions of the material (songwriting) and wouldn't need a separate, or new patent just for the Stereo rendering?

(Or re-issue.. which ought to have the original date on it anyway... as per every other album in existence!)

Interesting - the 1974 Decca main catalogue lists only the mono edition, with a date of July 1966; the 1975 main catalogue lists only the stereo edition, with a date of December 1969! So, I don't know whether the stereo was accidentally omitted from the 1974 catalogue, or if it was actually reissued during the following year, but Decca decided to use the original stereo issue date in the 1975 catalogue. And I think that is a 1969 on the unboxed label, the text is either partly worn away, or the printer didn't make proper contact in the first place. Can't help with any sonic differences, I'm afraid.

Questions about the date on this one...

...Labels show 1969 (Although I'm pretty sure it says 1959 on the unboxed b-side label!), although first issues linked give 1966 (?)

Any help clarifying this would be appreciated.

(I wonder if in the initial instance the mono was the only one available:1966, but then the Stereo required a new patent in 1969? - (Are there substantive differences in sound beyond the Mono / Stereo... re-record for stereo?)

With respect to JesterWX, added the original stereo cover art from an Ebay item (previous has the mono LK prefix). Also added 1971 boxed Decca repress labels.
