"Took extremely good care of the royalties" - I don't think I could comment without venturing into the realm of libel, but I get your drift, Lee, and so would J.C. Fogerty! Interesting to see that EP with the X variant of the catalogue number on the cover, which would make it 1973 at the earliest, but the record still having the original Liberty label, so Festival must still have had a fair few pressings to clear.
Weird, I've bought things with this label new as late as 1975 such as this Creedence EP. However, it seems that as usual Phil is right and this label was in use for 1970-71 until Fantasy took over the packaging and took extremely good care of the royalties as well. Hard to believe Creedence records could sit in the the shop for 4-5 years though.
P.S. another possible reason for the Liberty pressing inside the Fantasy cover is that someone replaced either their record or their cover with one from another issue at some point, but I can't rule out my first theory.
Hi Whassup, the first Australian release of this was in late 1970 or early 1971 (entered the chart in early February) as Liberty SLYL-934,039; Fantasy 8410 is the US catalogue number left over on the artwork, so it can be ignored. In 1972, the Fantasy label was established in Australia and other countries, so Festival (the licensee for both Liberty and Fantasy) renumbered this to FYL-34039 (co-incidental with the simplification of their numbering system), and it looks like they initially just put excess Liberty pressings inside newly-printed Fantasy covers. So, certainly not a first issue, but the actual record still showing Liberty might still be a first pressing, depending on how many copies were first pressed in 1971. Later, Festival simplified their numbering even further to drop the initial letters from their catalogue numbers, so this became L-34039; Discogs has one such pressing, though still showing FYL-34039 on the cover, but chances are that there were further pressings right up into the eighties with the shorter number on the cover.
I need help dating this release.
I understand that the original came out in 1970.
This one has 1972 dated on the back cover so I am presuming that this is correct.
What is confusing me is the 3 different Cat #'s.
"Fantasy 8410"
"FYL-34039"
"SLYL-934,039"
I bought this album recently from an online music store and it was advertised as a "1st Australian Pressing".
I'm thinking this is not the case.
Any help, advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
