ReviewFrom a purely British perspective this is quite a strange "Greatest Hits" package.
At the time of issue only two of the sixteen tracks on offer had made the UK national "Pop" charts and neither of those had been what could remotely be called "big hits" .... (B8 - "How Sweet It Is" had made #49 in December 1974 and B4 - "Little Darling" had made #50 in September 1966). At the time of issue, to the average British pop music buyer Mr Gaye would have been best known for his duets, notably "It Takes Two" with Kim Weston from early1967 and "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" with Tammi Terrell which was hovering around the lower reaches of the charts at the time.
What this collection actually consists of are selected tracks from his two US "Greatest Hits" packages, plus "Now That You've Won Me" (originally the "B" side of B6) that was on neither.
Tracks A4, A5, A7 & B1 are on The US "Greatest Hits" issued as Tamla 252 in April 1964.
Tracks A1, A2, A3, A6, A8, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 & B8 are on The US "Greatest Hits Volume 2" issued as Tamla 278 in August 1967. This UK "Greatest Hits" collection uses the same cover art as The US "Volume 2".
With the benefit of hindsight, as we now know that the popularity of Mr Gaye was about to explode in The UK, Tamla-Motown might have been better advised to have issued this as a Double LP comprising of the tracks from the two US LPs and padded it out with his duet hits (plus "Now That You've Got Me") to bring it up to 7 or 8 tracks on each side. It could have been a strong seller when he had his big run of UK hits in 1969/70.
Even so, there is a very worthwhile selection of tracks on here.
