Louis, I'm not sure if they kept track of the musicians in the Motown files before the 1970's - I know that there are session logs listing what was recorded when and where - and I really don't know about the AFM, but Motown management pretty much seemed to treat the musicians as chattels back then, and their attitude towards the artists wasn't much better either, it was all about the producers and writers. Much of the information that has come to light since has come from the musicians themselves, particularly in Allen Slutsky's book (and subsequent movie) STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN, and from the autobiographies of some of the artists.
It's "Huss" on the label, PhilMH (I know Leon Huff by name). For once in my life, I didn't make a typo...
So they didn't keep track of the musicians in the Motown files, nor at the AFM ?
Paul Riser is credited on some of the GK&TP albums I've added tonight.
Hi guys, Motown never credited their musicians during the 60's, the first Motown albums with musician credits were Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON and Stevie Wonder's WHERE I'M COMING FROM, both in 1971. I think all these tracks were recorded in Detroit, so the musicians were any combination of Earl Van Dyke and/or Johnny Griffiths on keyboards; James Jamerson on bass; Robert White, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis on guitars; Bennie Benjamin, Uriel Jones or Richard "Pistol" Allen on drums; strings and horns arranged by Paul Riser and/or Jerrry Long. I've always had a soft spot for this version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", quite different at a faster tempo and without the Wall Of Sound. BTW Louis, the second writer on B3 is Leon Huff, not Huss.
