Notes CB June 24, 1967 In 1960, Roberto Kimmel first became acquainted with Linda Ronstadt when he saw her perform with her older two siblings under the name of the Three Ronstadts, who had united with Mr. Kimmel and a banjo player named Richard Saltus. Accordingly, this quintet was called the New Union Ramblers, who primarily performed in night clubs in the Tucson area. After Mr. Kimmel had relocated to Los Angeles, he periodically wrote to Ms. Ronstadt to join him, but she was unable to do so due to the fact that Ms. Ronstadt was an adolescent who could not be with him until she had finished secondary school. Ironically, Ms. Ronstadt had quit secondary school, but had completed one term of college until she relocated to California in late 1964. After Ms. Ronstadt’s arrival in Los Angeles, Mr. Kimmel had already developed a friendship with Ken Edwards, who had both started to co-compose folk songs. While the Stone Poneys had an electric autoharp and a female singer, this group had was initially to consist of five members because this group thought that this was to be a unique set up. Sadly, the Jefferson Airplane and the Lovin’ Spoonful had already established such a set-up. Consequently, this group was reduced to three members, who were Ken Edwards, Roberto Kimmel and Linda Ronstadt which resulted in the professional debut of the Stone Poneys in 1965. Though all three members vocally sang these folk tunes by means of the first disc of 33.33 rpm, this second disc, Volume Two, was the first by which Ms. Ronstadt became the lead vocalist of all but the Evergreen tunes. Mr. Edwards had sung vocals by means of the Evergreen (Part One) tune and had played the sitar by means of the Evergreen (Part Two) tune. Not only was this Volume 2 disc this group’s most successful, the tune Different Drum was an international success and became the trademark song of this group. Finally, this was the final disc of 33.33 rpm that was both monaurally and stereofonically issued.
