Notes

Jack London and the Sparrows was a Canadian rock group that was established in Oshawa, Ontario in 1964 by British-born Dave Marden (Jack London), guitarist Dennis Edmonton and keyboard player David Hare.

Jack London and the Sparrows started as a beat group that heavily played music which had reflected the influence of the British invasion. A short time later, Jerry Edmonton had become a member who had played the drums.

When this group had relocated to Toronto in the latter part of 1964, they were signed by Capitol Records of Canada. After Nick St. Nicholas and Art Ayre joined this band in January 1965, these five members had recorded their only disc of 33.33 rpm and subsequent discs of 45 rpm by means of Capitol Records of Canada.

By the second half of 1965, London and the Sparrows had started to play a more North American blues-rock style genre. Sadly, the band members had become frustrated with Mr. London due to the fact that he had signed the Capitol of Canada recording contract so that Mr. London could earn most of the royalties. Accordingly, Mr. London became a solo artist, and the Sparrows minus Jack London had recorded their final disc of 45 rpm, Hard Times With The Law, which had reached a peak position of # 13 by means of the Canadian National Hit Parade.

In September of 1965, Art Ayre also left the Sparrows to pursue a musical career in jazz with the Art Ayre Trio. Then, Joachim Krauledat (John Kay) and John Raymond Goadsby (Goldy McJohn) were recruited and this new lineup of the Edmonton brothers, Nick St. Nicholas, John Kay and Goldy McJohn had made its live debut at the Waterloo Lutheran University in Waterloo, Ontario. This group had made such a big impact with their blues-rock music that they were signed to a recording contract in New York City thru Columbia Records. With the exception of Nick St. Nicholas, who had joined the Los Angeles based-group The Hardtimes, the remaining Sparrow members had evolved into Steppenwolf.
