In the mid 1980s this album was re-issued on the Fame label.

Indeed. Not all first pressings of records were A1/B1. And a record can have the same matrix numbers throughout its lifespan which could include several pressings or re-promotions.

I must have not understood the meaning of the matrix numbers, I thought it told me which pressing it was eg A1U/B2U 1st press, so its a mix number?

For what it's worth, I had just joined United Artists as Central London sales representative in late August/early September 1974, and this was the first big new release I was involved with.

From memory, the first sleeves were not laminated, but had a sheen to them, but you'd still call them matt finish. I honestly cannot recall seeing the yellow labels, but I would hardly be looking out for them.

I did have a copy of the first album batch from Sep. 1974, took it home listened to it, but must have given it away to a friend, no idea when.....

Not sure what point you are making Tony.
The matrix numbers denote which mix the artist/record company decide is the best to release and barring re-mixes can stay the same for the life of the release.
The label rim text for the 1974 release will always be "MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND. A PRODUCT OF LIBERTY-UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS LTD." as that was the design at that time.
As United Artists evolved the label rim text changed but there are transitional periods where old label stock was used and that could result in the mis-match you have found.

I don`t understand why the matrix numbers on the 1974 and 1977 release are the same A2U/B2U also label rim reads A PRODUCT OF LIBERTY UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS LTD.

I would say it is a repress wth old label stock on the B side; the later label would not have been available for an original pressing.
I have seen loads of such mis-matches but usually on UA singles only.
Nice find.

I have recently obtained another copy of this LP, but upon inspection noticed it is a mis pressing, it has 1977 re issue UA label on A side and original 1974 label on Bside, Matrices A2U / B2U.

I find this unusual, anyone else heard of this, is it a 1977 re issue with wrong Bside label or vice versa, Hawkmarty any ideas/???

I have the first issue brown label and yellow label and the next pressing (between 1976 and 1979) and all three have what I suspect you mean by the matt sleeve, as in there is not an obvious over lamination with a separate foil. All three sleeves are very smooth and don't feel like card; almost as though they have been impregnated with something to protect them.

Was the 1st pressing of this album issued with a laminated sleeve or a mat sleeve, I own both but not sure which one was the 1st pressing.

 More information:
First issue: All label text is in a bold font.
Production credits on Side 1 are on four lines and on Side 2 are on seven lines.
Label rim text ends "MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND. A PRODUCT OF LIBERTY-UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS LTD."
Single sleeve and picture inner sleeve with square corners. Inner sleeve correctly names "Lost Johnny".

For reasons best known to United Artists, Hall of the Mountain Grill was also issued with a yellow label with black text, reminiscent of the promotional EP with 4 tracks off this album that was issued in the United States.
All label text is in a lighter font. Production credits on Side 1 are on three lines and on Side 2 are on six lines.
Label rim text ends "MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND. A PRODUCT OF LIBERTY-UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS LTD."
Single sleeve and picture inner sleeve with square corners. Inner sleeve correctly names "Lost Johnny".

Second (Third?) pressing (possibly in 1977): Label text is in a mixture of bold and normal font.
Production credits on Side 1 are on four lines and on Side 2 are on six lines.
® after UA logo.
Label rim text ends "MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND. A PRODUCT OF UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS LTD."
Single sleeve and picture inner sleeve with rounded corners. Inner sleeve correctly names "Lost Johnny".

Also issued in 1981 as Liberty LBG 29672 with label rim text "MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY EMI RECORDS LIMITED".
No picture inner sleeve (as far as I know).
