Notes

George “Buddy” Guy is a blues guitarist and singer who was raised in Lettsworth, Louisiana where he had learned to play the guitar using a two-string diddley bow simply because his family did not have enough money to buy a full-string guitar.

During the early 1950s, Mr. Guy had relocated to Baton Rouge where he began performing with various bands. To afford his living expenses, he did custodian work at Louisiana State University. A few years later, Mr. Guy had moved to Chicago where he had competed with various West Side Chicago guitarists, and earned a recording contract at Cobra recording studio. Though Mr. Guy was backed by Ike Turner on guitar during the recording of the second disc of 45 rpm of Mr. Guy, he had virtually no success. Accordingly, Mr. Guy signed a recording contract with Chess Records.

This transition was not a much better situation due to the fact that Mr. Leonard Chess had refused to let Mr. Guy to play in the novel style of his live shows. Furthermore, Mr. Chess had tried to have Mr. Guy record as a solo artist with rhythm and blues ballads, jazz instrumentals, soul and novelty dance tunes, but none of the Chess recordings of Mr. Guy were ever issued by means of a disc of 45 rpm. However, most of these tunes were issued on the I Left My Blues in San Francisco LP which was the first solo album of Mr. Guy and the only disc of 33.33 rpm to be issued by Chess.

In 1968, Mr. Guy had signed a recording contract with Vanguard records where he recorded the songs of “A Man and his Blues” which was his first Vanguard disc of 33.33 rpm and the final Vanguard disc of 33.33 rpm that was both monaurally and stereofonically issued in the United States and Canada. Despite the fact that this LP did not sell well, Mr. Guy was ranked the 23rd best guitarist by means of the "Rolling Stone” magazine.
