The issue isn't whether the 'h' is sounded or not, it's where the stress lies in the word. If the stress is on the first syllable, then 'a' is fine. If it's on the second syllable, then 'an' is far more euphonic. And I don't care what Oxford says...

the "h" is most definitely pronounced in joan aiken's wonderfully atmospheric armitage family whimsy about a heirloom. . .

Anyone know what This one charted at (if it charted at all?

Sorry - Must vehemently disagree! The 'H' is only silent in the following: Hour(ly), Heir, Heirloom, Honour(-ed; ing; able). In ALL other cases, the 'H' is aspirated(pronounced), thus: A Hard Day's Night(Beatles song); A historic event, A herbal remedy, A heavy load, A heap of old LPs A horrific sight, a horrible crime.

a "mugwump" is a bird that sits on a fence with its face - its "mug" - on one side of the fence, and its "wump" - its rump - on t'other :-)

these mugwumps later got a name-check in the mamas and the papas' "creeque alley".

neil forbes: the initial "h" is silent in the idiolects of a fair few people i've met over the last forty-five years or so: it is perfectly reasonable for them to use "an" in such context.
numpties using "an" and pronouncing the aspirate, feel free to line 'em up against a wall once your revolution's succeeded. . .

Would've half-solved the problem but grammatically.... it always rankled me when someone said "an historic... this or that" It was like fingers dragged down a blackboard to me.

The title should've been "A Historic Recording", not An...! The H in Historic is NOT silent, thus takes "A" as its preposition, not "An"! Sorry to be pedantic on this but this mishandling of the word, History, noun and adjectival forms thereof, really sticks in my claw. Come to think of it, any word beginning with "H' where the letter is aspirated(pronounced), such as "herb" for instance. "he used a herbal remedy". Take note America! HERB, not ERB!
