Bill Haley - BiographyPioneering Rock and Roll singer, songwriter, guitarist and bass player (1925-1981). Began as a country-western singer in the late 1940s (many of these recordings not appearing on album until the late 1970s and 80s), and then started experimenting with rock and roll in 1950-51. Best known as leader of Bill Haley and His Comets (or The Comets) and their anthemic 1954 recording, Rock Around the Clock, which became rock and roll's first #1 hit in 1955 after it was used as the opening titles music for the film Blackboard Jungle. Hits ended in the U.S. after 1960 and Haley recorded primarily singles and the occasional album in the U.S. in the 60s, but a number of albums for the Orfeon/Dimsa label in Mexico. Later signed with Sonet Records of Europe and recorded a number of albums with them during the last 13 years of his life - mostly in the U.S. though the albums were primarily issued in Europe, with some Sonet material never being issued in the U.S. Haley was one of the first to record "theme albums" in the rock era, something that he did during his time at Decca in the 1950s (one of songs based on girl's names, another being adaptations of international folk songs, another being strictly instrumental). Not to be confused with early 20th century songwriter Bill Halley. « Back to Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
