Roland Hanna - Biography

Roland Hanna was a jazz pianist who originally trained to play classical piano arrangements, but he chose to professionally play jazz-style genres. After Mr. Hanna had completed his armed forces duties, he first studied at the Eastman School of Music, then transferred to the Juilliard School of Music. The first time that Mr. Hanna had played at the Newport Jazz Festival, he was a member of the Benny Goodman band which had also toured Europe and had performed at the Brussels World Fair.

Mr. Hanna had played with the Charles Mingus band the second time that he played at the Newport festival in 1959. That same year, Mr. Hanna had recorded a jazz rendition of the Broadway musical success, which was called Destry Rides Again, which was the title of his first Atco disc of 33.33 rpm.

Although one tune of this disc, The Best Things In Life Are Free, is not widely known among modern music listeners, the phrase is one that many parents have taught to their children that if one want to be prosperous, one must independently seek and achieve one’s goals through persistent hard work and dedication.

Sadly, Mr. Hanna had died of a viral infection of the heart the 13 November 2002 at the age of seventy years.
