The Everly Brothers - Biography

Don was the dark-haired, eldest, Phil was the blond. Don was born in Brownie Kentucky in 1937, then Phil was born in Chicago in 1939 as the parents moved west to Iowa. The father Ike was a professional singer who toured and sang live on regional radio stations. The boys learned to sing this way too.
In 1956 the brothers moved to Nashville to find their careers, guided by Chet Atkins.
They had big hits on the Cadence label from 1957 to 1960. In 1960 Warner Brothers made what was the richest deal in music history signing them to a ten year contract. Big hits continued til 1962.
About that time they were drafted into the army, creating an interruption. It was found that their personalities were not suited for military life, and they were released after one year. Don also developed health problems based on the use of prescription stimulants.
Hits after that were sporadic.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
Phil died in 2014 of lung disease. Don died of undisclosed causes in 2021.
