Dr. Hook - Sexy Eyes (1979)
"When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" was issued on 12" on Germany, the Netherlands and the USA but the Long Version was instead released as a B-side to one of their follow-ups in the UK. 45cat has the corresponding 7" as being released on 29 Feb 1980, so wouldn't the date for this 12" be around the same time, rather than 1979?

Yes, the print looks much more modern. I note that the date of 1975 has now been removed from this record.

Brotherhood Of Man - Figaro (1977)
This version seems to have been exclusive to Canada, although the original 7" version was a UK #1.

The Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap (1979)
For some reason, ten seconds longer than the usual 5:02. So was it only cut by that length on the 7" singles? Seems a bit pointless.

Not issued in the UK.

Boney M - Dancing In The Streets (1978)
The link below no longer works. But it's interesting that this wasn't released in the UK, and the B-side was flipped too. According to Discogs, both sides actually run 6:20 in length, not 7:00/5:30 as printed.

Could be the earliest UK 12" single on here?

The Floaters - Float On (1977)
Henry29, your link doesn’t work now.

I guess this was the first multi-format #1 then? In the 50s there were singles on 45 and 78, and Mungo Jerry had two 45 formats. But 12” singles gave people a reason to buy both formats, for different tracks, in a way which doesn’t really apply to the earlier releases. Those were issued at different speeds for the record player you had.

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive (Full Length Mix) (1979)
Though they were both out at the same time. I wonder when 12” sales were first included in the chart.

Can we have the year added here please.

Various Artists - Coca-Cola (1965)
1965. I probably noted it in the submission, as you can’t specify a year earlier than 1972 in this section. That’s probably because it’s for the 12” single format, and those weren’t around before then. But this is a 10” EP at 33 1/3, with two tracks on each side. Labels and more info here. Okay, the label says Long Playing. But does that mean it belongs in the Vinyl Album section? A 10” EP in the 60s is an oddity indeed, albeit for promotional purposes only. Personally I wouldn’t include 10” releases with 12” ones, but that’s what we have on the site.

Was there a point to issuing the same versions from the 7” single on 12”? That’s what I think these are, judging by the track lengths.

The Who - Substitute (1976)
Probably the first charting 12” single too, in the UK. I thought it was Boney M with ‘Daddy Cool’ but that was two months later. I suppose theirs was the first new one, since this is a reissue.

Boney M - Daddy Cool (1976)
According to the Top of the Pops 1976 compilation CD notes, this was the first charting 12” single in the UK. However, it would appear that it was actually The Who’s ‘Substitute’ reissue, two months earlier, which charted first. Boney M were perhaps first to chart with new material on a 12” single.

Good to see they finally got the original HMV logo on an Elvis reissue.

B1 is actually just an instrumental version of the lead track.

Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky (1987)
Fun escapist bubblegum pop is what it was; not that a great deal of Kylie's market would have been thinking about such lofty subjects as those mentioned by Lee. But hey - it does actually have roots in high culture - Pete Waterman has said the tune was inspired by Pachelbel's Canon. Not sure that many UK number ones in early 1988 reflected the political situation although that seems to have changed as the year went on... ;)

Elvis Presley With The Jordanaires - ELVIS 18 UK # 1s (2005)
I'm glad you agree on that point. The music is surely the most important thing and to present them in a sound format which deviates from the original is not faithful to the original #1 hit, which is what the series was meant to represent. It means that "It's Now or Never" is technically a different version to the one which topped the chart back in 1960. So is that the only recording to make #1 in both mono and stereo? The list of recordings to make #1 more than once is small anyway:
"My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison (1971 and 2002; though with different 'B-sides'),
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen (1975 and 1991, though on the latter occasion it was a double-A side with "These Are The Days Of Our Lives").
"Jailhouse Rock" (1958 and 2005)
"One Night" / "I Got Stung" (1959 and 2005)
"It's Now Or Never" (1960 and 2005)

EveryHit link
(Although that link hasn't been updated for a while, and my knowledge of the period since then is sketchy!)

"Jailhouse Rock" is also a longer version to the one which made #1 in 1958.

To all intents and purposes, they were meant to be replicas though.

Elvis Presley With The Jordanaires - ELVIS 18 UK # 1s (2005)
Quote:
The only real plus and bonus for the collector was that all the titles that had been recored and mixed for stereo were being cut and pressed that way. The mastering and cutting engineer did a great job with both the stereo and the mono mixes that came out.
Completely rewriting history to use stereo mixes of mono singles. Not a true representation of the originals, really disappointing and a missed opportunity I feel.

Interesting! Shame the singer isn't a crooner though...
